Filed under: Money College, School By now, the typical criteria for college financial aid have emblazoned themselves into the collective consciousness of students nationwide: demonstrable need, merit, perhaps ethnicity or specific college major for certain scholarships and grants. A relatively new website, however, aims to circumvent those pillars of the college financial aid system and replace them with a couple of much simpler ones: self-promotional savvy and sheer desperation.
The website SponsorMyDegree.com made headlines and inspired some heated message-board debates this week with its upstart blend of social networking and a process it refers to as "micro-philanthropy." Basically, the site enables student to erect Facebook-style profiles and plead their case to site-browsing prospective donors as to why they deserve, need or just plain really want some help financing their education.Continue reading Higher ed on handouts? Want an RV? Rent one first

Filed under: Saving Money, Transportation, Travel The American Automobile Association predicts that there are going to be 34.9 million people traveling July 4th weekend, up 17% from last year. About 90% of them will be driving, AAA says.
The AAA doesn't appear to have any statistics about how many of them will be dragging or driving a recreational vehicle, but when you are out there on a holiday weekend, you'd swear that at least a third of the folks on the road are swinging and swaying along with their housing in tow.
In fact, the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association reports that more than 8.2 million U.S. households own an RV. Of those, 45.4% expect to travel more often in their RV this summer than they did last year; 41.9% say they'll be traveling the same amount.Continue reading Want an RV? Rent one first Want an RV? Don't lose your rewards if your credit card is discontinued

Filed under: Credit Cards We told you earlier this year how Starbucks dissolved its partnership with Visa and discontinued its Duetto rewards card. As it turns out, it's not uncommon for issuers to discontinue a card in order to roll out a "new and improved" product. So what do you do if your card is discontinued? To find out, WalletPop spoke with Beverly Harzog, spokeswoman for CardRatings.com, for some expert advice.
While consumers fear being stuck at a cash register with a card that suddenly doesn't work, Harzog says this is unlikely to happen if you've been monitoring your mail. Issuers will notify you about changes to your account by mail or email (however you've elected to have them ordinarily communicate with you). Just be sure to read any and all messages your issuer sends you, and you won't be stuck at a register with a nonfunctional card.
According to the CARD Act that passed in February, issuers have to give 45 days' notice for major account changes; however, Harzog says it's not clear that this includes card discontinuation (ironic though that is). It's unlikely they'll give you less than 30 days' warning, though, so plan accordingly. If you have any bills automatically paid on that card, transfer them over to another one as soon as possible. Filed under: Extracurriculars, Career Liv Ballard, of Los Angeles, CA, had always been passionate about art and art history. She loved pottery, ceramics, collecting vintage jewelry, speaking French.
Then she got married, and stepped into the role of supportive wife, particularly once her husband's career as a record producer starting taking off. This is a role Ballard held for over 25 years until one day, she says, she felt it was time to "step out of the shadows" and get back to her creative roots.
Here's how she did it, and how you can, too, in three easy steps.
Be Courageous
"I had a desire to express myself as an artist, scary as that might be," says Ballard, whose decision to make bold, sophisticated, one-of-a-kind jewelry and ultimately start her own premium line coincided with the decision to end her marriage (and the safety net that comes with the territory). "It was overwhelming, but you can't be fearful; you have to be willing to step into the arena," says Ballard. "And doing what I love doing has been so fulfilling." Not to mention, rewarding: Ballard's pieces, which retail from $15,000 to $65,000, are now sold at Maxfield, a luxury boutique in Los Angeles, and on www.1stdibs.com. And she proudly counts rock stars and royalty among her clients.
